Key takeaways

  • Hyperliquid is the best perp DEX for most traders in 2026: the deepest books (about $8.5B open interest on DefiLlama, 27 Sept 2026) and the widest market list, at 0.045% taker base fee.
  • Lighter is the pick for low costs and custody: 0% fees on Standard accounts and a ZK rollup on Ethereum with an escape hatch, but thinner books and a 300ms delay.
  • Variational Omni charges no trading fees and lists 550+ crypto, stock, commodity and FX markets, but you pay a spread to a single counterparty and need an access code.
  • For onchain options rather than perps, Derive is the specialist venue.

The best perp DEX for most traders in 2026 is Hyperliquid, which has the deepest liquidity and the broadest market list of any onchain perpetuals exchange. Lighter is the best choice if you want zero trading fees and Ethereum-enforced custody. Variational Omni suits traders who want hundreds of crypto and TradFi markets with no trading fees and are happy to trade against a single market maker.

For options rather than perps, look at Derive. Numbers below are as of September 2026. Fees and listings change often, so the linked docs are the source of truth.

Open interest comes from DefiLlama’s perps rankings. Market counts come from each exchange’s public market data or docs on 27 September 2026.

How do you choose a perp DEX?

Four things decide it. Rank them for your own trading before picking.

  1. Liquidity. Your real cost per trade is fee plus slippage. On a deep book, a $50,000 order barely moves the price. On a thin one it can cost more than a year of fee savings. Open interest is a rough proxy, and Hyperliquid leads by a wide margin.
  2. Fees. They matter most if you trade often at small to medium size. A trader doing $2M a month in taker orders pays about $900 on Hyperliquid’s base tier and nothing on Lighter Standard.
  3. Custody model. “Decentralised” covers very different trust assumptions. Ask what happens to your USDC if the operator disappears tomorrow. Only Lighter has a forced-exit path enforced by Ethereum.
  4. Markets. If you want gold, oil, the S&P 500 or a pre-IPO company alongside BTC, your options narrow to venues that list them, and liquidity on those markets varies a lot.

Hyperliquid: best overall

Hyperliquid is a purpose-built layer 1 running a fully onchain order book. Trading is gasless, you sign orders with your wallet, and USDC arrives through a bridge.

Fees. The fee schedule starts at 0.045% taker and 0.015% maker, dropping in seven tiers based on 14-day volume (the first step is at $5M). Staking HYPE takes 5% to 40% off, and a referral code takes 4% off your first $25M. A $10,000 market order costs $4.50 at base tier, or $4.32 with the referral. Full detail in Hyperliquid fees explained.

Liquidity and markets. About $8.5B of open interest on its core perps (DefiLlama, 27 September 2026), several times more than any other perp DEX on that date. HIP-3 lets third parties launch their own perp exchanges on Hyperliquid. The largest, trade.xyz, lists stocks and commodities and held another $3.9B of open interest on the same date. Leverage goes up to 40x on BTC and 25x on ETH.

Downsides.

  • Custody rests on validator consensus. L2BEAT’s custody analysis counts 28 validators, with the Foundation controlling about half the stake, and notes there is no permissionless exit.
  • Validators have intervened before: in the 2025 JELLY episode they delisted a manipulated market and settled it at a price they chose.
  • Base fees are the highest of the three exchanges here.

Who it’s for: anyone trading size, anyone trading altcoins where depth matters, and anyone who wants one venue for crypto and stock perps. To get started, open Hyperliquid with the referral discount and follow the Hyperliquid trading guide.

Lighter: best for zero fees and custody

Lighter runs an order book inside a ZK rollup. Every batch of trades is proven, and Ethereum verifies the proof before the exchange state updates.

Fees. Per the trading fees page, Standard accounts pay 0% maker and 0% taker. The price is speed: 300ms on taker orders and cancels, and 200ms on maker orders. Premium accounts remove most of the delay (140ms taker) and pay 0.028% taker and 0.004% maker, reduced by up to 30% with staked LIT. There’s also a Plus tier at 0.005% for API users who want higher rate limits. The Lighter fees guide works through when Premium pays off.

Liquidity and markets. About $0.6B of open interest on the main exchange, plus about $0.2B on Lighter’s separate Robinhood Chain deployment (DefiLlama, 27 September 2026). Around 210 perp markets, including forex pairs at up to 25x, gold, silver and pre-IPO markets. BTC and ETH go to 50x.

Custody. This is Lighter’s strongest point. If the sequencer ignores withdrawal requests you submit on Ethereum, the contracts enter escape-hatch mode and you can withdraw using data already posted onchain. The caveat from L2BEAT: the team can still upgrade the contracts, including the proof verifier, with no delay.

Downsides.

  • Books are much thinner than Hyperliquid’s, especially outside the majors.
  • The 300ms Standard delay hurts scalpers and bots.
  • The referral perk (a free week of Premium, fees rebated up to $10M of volume) only matters if you use Premium.

Who it’s for: fee-sensitive traders on majors, swing traders who don’t care about 300ms, and anyone who wants the strongest custody guarantees available. Start by opening Lighter and read what Lighter is for the full picture. For the head-to-head, see Hyperliquid vs Lighter.

Variational Omni: best for market breadth

Omni works differently from the other two. There is no order book. When you enter an order, the Omni Liquidity Provider (OLP), Variational’s in-house market maker, quotes you a price, and OLP is the counterparty to every trade. It hedges its exposure on other venues, which is how it can list 550+ markets without building liquidity for each one from scratch.

Fees. Omni’s fee page lists no maker or taker fees. Deposits and withdrawals cost a flat 0.1 USDC, and liquidations close at the bid minus 0.5% (longs) or ask plus 0.5% (shorts). The platform makes money from the spread in its quotes, and the docs say 20% of that spread currently goes to the protocol treasury. The order form shows the spread for your size before you confirm, so check it: on a liquid market like BTC it should be tight, but on exotic listings it can outweigh the fee you’d pay elsewhere.

Liquidity and markets. About $1.05B of open interest (DefiLlama, 27 September 2026), more than Lighter’s main exchange. Markets cover crypto, US stocks, commodities (oil, gold, copper, natural gas), FX, indices and pre-IPO names such as OpenAI and Anthropic, all from one cross-margined USDC account with up to 50x leverage.

Custody. Each user’s USDC sits in their own onchain settlement pool on Arbitrum, shared only with OLP, and the docs state that OLP never moves trader funds to external venues. The weak point is the counterparty itself. If OLP became insolvent, profits owed to traders would become bad debt, as the OLP docs spell out. OLP is currently funded by the Variational team. Pricing also comes from Variational’s own oracle.

Points. Omni runs a points program ahead of the $VAR token, which Variational says launches in Q4 2026 with 32% of supply airdropped to points holders. Weekly point distributions end no later than the end of Q4 2026. The Variational points and airdrop guide covers how points are earned.

Downsides.

  • Single counterparty, single oracle, and a team-funded liquidity provider.
  • You can’t see an order book, so you’re trusting the quote is competitive.
  • Access code required during the private beta.
  • Deposits are Arbitrum USDC only.

Who it’s for: traders who want TradFi and long-tail markets in one place, and points farmers positioning for $VAR. Omni needs an access code, and an existing user’s referral code works for this (details on our Variational referral code page). Sign up through Variational Omni, then follow the Omni trading guide.

What about options? Derive

None of the three exchanges above lists options. If you want to buy calls or puts, sell covered calls or trade volatility onchain, Derive (formerly Lyra) is the specialist venue for onchain options. DefiLlama showed about $0.09B of open interest on Derive on 27 September 2026, so it’s far smaller than the perp venues. Our guide on how to trade options on Derive walks through the basics.

Other perp DEXs worth knowing

A few other exchanges have meaningful volume, though we cover them less deeply:

  • Aster: about $1.4B of open interest on DefiLlama on 27 September 2026, making it one of the larger perp DEXs.
  • GRVT, edgeX, ApeX Omni and Extended: order-book perp exchanges with smaller open interest (between roughly $0.1B and $0.5B each on the same date).
  • GMX and dYdX: earlier-generation designs. GMX trades against a liquidity pool and dYdX runs its own Cosmos-based chain.

Our verdict

  • Start with Hyperliquid if you only want one exchange. Its liquidity makes it the safest place to trade size, and the 4% referral discount trims the higher fees.
  • Add Lighter if you trade majors often and want to cut fees to zero, or if Ethereum-backed withdrawals matter to you.
  • Use Variational Omni for markets the others don’t list, and compare its quoted spread with Hyperliquid’s book before trading size.
  • Use Derive for options.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best perp DEX in 2026?

For most traders, Hyperliquid, because it has the deepest liquidity and most markets among decentralised perp exchanges. Lighter is better if you want zero trading fees, and Variational Omni if you want TradFi and long-tail markets from one USDC account.

Which perp DEX has the lowest fees?

Lighter Standard accounts and Variational Omni both charge 0% maker and taker fees. Lighter adds a 200 to 300ms delay instead, and Omni earns from the spread it quotes you, so neither is completely free to trade.

Are perp DEXs safe?

They remove exchange custody of your keys, but not all risk. Hyperliquid relies on its validator set, Lighter's contracts can still be upgraded by its team without delay, and Omni's single liquidity provider could in theory become insolvent. Leverage and liquidation risk apply everywhere.

Do perp DEXs require KYC?

Hyperliquid, Lighter and Variational Omni all let you trade from a self-custody wallet without an identity check. Each has a list of restricted jurisdictions in its terms, so check yours before depositing.

Can I trade stocks on a perp DEX?

Yes. Hyperliquid lists stock perps through HIP-3 exchanges such as trade.xyz, Lighter offers equity, forex and metals markets, and Variational Omni lists stocks, commodities and pre-IPO perps alongside crypto.
