Key takeaways
- Hyperliquid has far deeper liquidity: about $8.5B of open interest on DefiLlama (27 Sept 2026) versus about $0.6B on Lighter's main exchange.
- Lighter is cheaper: Standard accounts pay 0% maker and taker, with a 200–300ms speed bump. Hyperliquid starts at 0.045% taker and 0.015% maker.
- Lighter has the stronger custody model: a ZK rollup on Ethereum with an escape hatch. Hyperliquid's funds rely on its validator set, and L2BEAT notes there is no permissionless exit.
- Pick Hyperliquid for size, depth and market breadth; pick Lighter if you trade small to medium size, care about fees, or want Ethereum-enforced withdrawals.
Hyperliquid is the better choice if you need deep liquidity, large size or the widest market list; Lighter is the better choice if you want to pay zero trading fees and prefer a custody model enforced by Ethereum. Hyperliquid runs its own layer 1 and charges 0.045% taker at the base tier. Lighter is a ZK rollup on Ethereum where Standard accounts trade for free in exchange for a small execution delay.

How are Hyperliquid and Lighter built?
Hyperliquid is its own blockchain. Orders, matching, margin and liquidations all run inside HyperCore, a state machine secured by Hyperliquid’s validator set. Trading is gasless, and USDC enters through a bridge (deposits are accepted from Arbitrum, Ethereum, Base and Polygon according to the onboarding docs).
Lighter is a rollup. A sequencer matches orders off-chain, a prover generates ZK proofs for batches of trades, and Ethereum contracts verify those proofs before the exchange state updates. Lighter also posts the data needed to rebuild every account to Ethereum as blobs, per its architecture page.
In practice the difference shows up in two places: who you are trusting with your money, and how fast your orders hit the book.
Who controls your funds on each exchange?
This is where the two exchanges differ most. L2BEAT’s Lighter vs Hyperliquid analysis (July 2026) is the best technical source on it.
Hyperliquid: trust the validators
- Validator set. L2BEAT counts 28 validators, with the Hyperliquid Foundation directly controlling about half the stake.
- Bridge. The main Arbitrum bridge is secured by permissioned validator subsets, two groups of four, with no proof system checking their work.
- No independent exit. If the validators stop or collude, there is no permissionless way to pull your USDC out.
- Discretion over outcomes. In the 2025 JELLY incident, validators delisted a manipulated market and settled it at a price they chose, sparing the HLP vault a loss of roughly $13M. That outcome protected vault depositors, but it shows validators can rewrite results after the fact.
Lighter: trust the math, mostly
- Validity proofs. Ethereum only accepts a new Lighter state if the proof checks out. Per L2BEAT, the circuits enforce price-time priority, block liquidations of solvent accounts and stop the operator from moving funds without your signature.
- Escape hatch. You can submit a withdrawal or reduce-only order to a priority queue on Ethereum. If the sequencer ignores it past a set deadline, the contracts freeze and users withdraw directly using the data on Ethereum.
- The catch. L2BEAT classifies Lighter as Stage 0: the team can still upgrade the contracts, including the proof verifier, with no delay. A malicious upgrade could in theory bypass the guarantees above. Until that upgrade power is limited, you are still trusting the team, just in a narrower way.
How much does each exchange charge?
Hyperliquid fees
Hyperliquid uses a 14-day rolling volume schedule. From the official fee page:
| 14-day volume | Taker | Maker |
|---|---|---|
| Under $5M (base) | 0.045% | 0.015% |
| Over $5M | 0.040% | 0.012% |
| Over $25M | 0.035% | 0.008% |
| Over $100M | 0.030% | 0.004% |
| Over $500M | 0.028% | 0% |
| Over $2B | 0.026% | 0% |
| Over $7B | 0.024% | 0% |
On top of that, staking HYPE cuts fees by 5% (over 10 HYPE) up to 40% (over 500,000 HYPE), and a referral code takes 4% off your first $25M of volume. Spot volume counts double toward your tier. Our Hyperliquid fees breakdown covers maker rebates and how the discounts combine.
Lighter fees
Lighter’s trading fees page lists three account types:
| Account | Taker | Maker | Taker latency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard (default) | 0% | 0% | 300ms (maker 200ms, cancels 300ms) |
| Plus (opt-in) | 0.005% | 0.005% | 300ms, with higher API rate limits |
| Premium (opt-in) | 0.028% | 0.004% | 140ms, no delay on cancels and post-only orders |
Premium fees drop with staked LIT, from 2.5% off at 1,000 LIT to 30% off at 500,000 LIT (0.0196% taker). The Lighter fees guide explains when Premium is worth paying for.
What that means on a real trade
Take a $10,000 market order (taker):
- Hyperliquid, base tier: $4.50. With the referral discount: $4.32.
- Lighter Standard: $0.
- Lighter Premium, no LIT staked: $2.80.
Now scale it to someone trading $2M a month, all taker. That stays under Hyperliquid’s $5M 14-day threshold, so it’s base tier: about $900 a month, or $864 with the referral discount. The same flow on Lighter Standard costs nothing in fees. On Premium it costs $560.
Fees aren’t the whole cost, though. On a thin book you can lose more to slippage than you save on fees, which brings us to liquidity.
Is Lighter really free?
For Standard accounts, yes: no maker or taker fee. The trade-off is the latency. Your market order reaches the book 300ms after you send it, and cancels take 300ms too. For a swing trader that’s irrelevant. For a scalper or anyone running a bot against fast markets, 300ms is long enough for the price to move against you, which is why active traders pay for Premium. Deposits and withdrawals have their own minimums (for example, fast withdrawals are USDC-only with a 4 USDC minimum per Lighter’s API docs).
Which has better liquidity and more markets?
Hyperliquid, clearly. On 27 September 2026, DefiLlama’s perps rankings showed about $8.5B of open interest on Hyperliquid’s core perps and a further $3.9B on trade.xyz, a HIP-3 exchange built on Hyperliquid that lists stocks and commodities. Lighter’s main exchange showed about $0.6B, plus about $0.2B on its Robinhood Chain deployment.
Daily volume tells the same story. The exchanges’ own market data for that Sunday showed roughly $3.8B of 24-hour volume on Hyperliquid’s core perps against roughly $0.8B on Lighter. Weekend numbers run low on both, but the ratio is typical.
What that means for you:
- BTC and ETH at retail size: both books are deep enough that slippage on a $10,000 order is small on either.
- Large orders and altcoins: Hyperliquid’s depth matters. Mid-cap and small-cap books on Lighter are thinner, and the fee savings can disappear in slippage.
- Market breadth: Hyperliquid lists about 180 core perps, and HIP-3 adds equities, indices and commodities from third-party deployers. Lighter lists around 210 markets, including forex pairs (EURUSD, USDJPY and others at up to 25x), gold and silver, and pre-IPO markets that run in isolated margin only.
- Leverage: Lighter allows up to 50x on BTC and ETH. Hyperliquid caps BTC at 40x and ETH at 25x. Most altcoins are 10x or lower on both.
Hyperliquid also has a deeper ecosystem around the exchange: HyperEVM apps, spot trading, and the HLP vault that anyone can deposit into (see Hyperliquid vaults explained). Lighter’s equivalent is LLP, which provides liquidity and handles liquidations.
What do new users get from each referral program?
The two programs reward different kinds of traders.
Hyperliquid gives a flat 4% discount on your fees for your first $25M of volume, per the referral docs. On base-tier taker fees, that’s $0.18 saved per $10,000 traded. It applies to every trade from day one. Our Hyperliquid referral code page shows how to apply it, including if you already have an account.
Lighter gives referred users one week of Premium with all fees rebated every Monday, capped at $10M of volume, per the referral program page. It only has value if you use Premium, since Standard is already free. It’s effectively a free trial of the faster execution tier. Referral attribution is permanent and can’t be added after signup. Details on the Lighter referral code page.
Which should you choose?
Pick Hyperliquid if:
- You trade size (tens of thousands per order and up) or trade mid-cap altcoins where depth matters.
- You want the broadest market list, including stocks through HIP-3.
- You’re comfortable with validator-based custody given its track record.
- To start, open Hyperliquid with the referral discount and follow our step-by-step Hyperliquid guide.
Pick Lighter if:
- Fees are your biggest cost and a 300ms delay doesn’t hurt your strategy.
- You mostly trade BTC, ETH, SOL or other majors where Lighter’s books are adequate.
- You want forex or metals perps alongside crypto.
- You value the escape hatch and Ethereum-verified state. Our Lighter explainer goes deeper on how it works.
- To start, open Lighter, connect your wallet and use a referral link at signup if you plan to try Premium.
Use both if you want the best of each: keep some margin on Lighter for free trades on majors and route large or exotic orders to Hyperliquid. The best perp DEX roundup adds Variational Omni to the comparison.
Frequently asked questions
Is Lighter cheaper than Hyperliquid?
Yes, for most users. Lighter Standard accounts pay no trading fees, while Hyperliquid charges 0.045% taker and 0.015% maker at the base tier. Lighter's Premium tier (0.028% taker, 0.004% maker) is also below Hyperliquid's base rates.
Which is safer, Hyperliquid or Lighter?
On custody design, Lighter: its state is proven with validity proofs on Ethereum and users can force withdrawals through an escape hatch. Hyperliquid relies on validator consensus, although it has a much longer track record at scale. L2BEAT notes Lighter's team can still upgrade its contracts without delay.
Does Hyperliquid or Lighter have more liquidity?
Hyperliquid, by a wide margin. On 27 September 2026 DefiLlama showed roughly $8.5B of open interest on Hyperliquid's core perps against about $0.6B on Lighter's main exchange.
Can I use both Hyperliquid and Lighter?
Yes. Both are non-KYC, wallet-based exchanges that take USDC, so many traders keep margin on each and route trades by size and market.
